D2L Learning Object Repository

Summary

Instructions for faculty: How to review and retrieve resources from learning object repositories in D2L.

Body

Bemidji State University has a campus-wide Learning Object Repository (LOR) in D2L. The idea behind the LOR is that individual files, quizzes, or content modules can be published to the LOR, and then any faculty member can link to or copy the items into their own D2L course.

The LOR is called “Bemidji State,” and includes student resource modules that you can add to your courses if desired. (More objects will be added over time.)

  1. D2L Support for Students
  2. Practice Using D2L Tools
  3. BSU Student Resources and Tips

In addition, you can review and retrieve resources from a MERLOT repository and a system-wide repository called Minnesota Online Digital Exchange

Instructions on how to preview and add LOR objects in your course:

  1. Enter your course in D2L and go to your Content page
  2. Select the Table of Contents heading in the left frame
  3. Select the arrow next to Table of Contents in the center frame, then select Add Object from LOR
  4. [Optional] Enter a key word in the Search For box
  5. Select Show Repositories
  6. Select the Repositories that you want to search in (Bemidji State, Minnesota Online Digital Exchange, and/or MERLOT)
  7. Scroll up and select the Search button
  8. To see a preview of an object, select the arrow next to the object and select Preview
  9. To retrieve an object into your course, select the radio button to the left of the object and then select Next
  10. Select how you want to retrieve the object
    1. Dynamic Link to Newest Version: Select this option to create a link that always points to the newest version of this learning object
    2. Locked Link to This Version: Select this option to create a link that always points to the specified version of the learning object
    3. Copy as Content: Select this option to create a copy of the learning object in Content
  11. Select Next
  12. Select a parent Module for the object, or select Add a module to create a new module to place the object in
  13. Select Create Topic (NOTE: Even if you are retrieving a module, the button will say create topic)
  14. A processing screen will appear for a few moments and then the object will appear in your course.

A few notes about the LOR

  • An LOR object can only contain links or files--it is not able to include other course components such as assignments, quizzes, and grades.
  • The ability to publish and retrieve objects from the campus-wide LOR is based on permissions. The current permissions are set to allow the lead D2L administrator to upload items, and anyone with the teacher role in a course to retrieve items.
  • If you have a file or module resource that you would like to add to the campus-wide repository, please contact beth.jensen@bemidjistate.edu.

Looking ahead…

In addition to the campus-wide repository, we can create Department-level repositories that would allow faculty within a department to publish items to and retrieve items from their own department LOR. If you would like more information about this, please contact beth.jensen@bemidjistate.edu.
