If a student doesn’t submit a quiz before the quiz closes, the quiz may get stuck “in progress.” This can happen when a student experiences a power or Internet issue while taking a quiz but can also be a result of student error.
Resolve an In-progress quiz attempt
When an In-progress attempt occurs, the instructor of the course can:

View the attempt and event log to view student progress

Delete the attempt and allow the student to start over

Submit the attempt for the student, and give a 2nd attempt when appropriate
View an “In Progress” Quiz Attempt

Go to the Quiz page.

Select the arrow next to the quiz and select Grade.

Scroll down to view student attempts and look for attempts that include the (In progress) notation.

To view the attempt, select the Attempt 1 link.

After selecting Attempt 1 you will see a link for the “Quizzes Event Log.” This log will show you the student’s progress in the quiz including time stamps of when the student entered the quiz and when questions were saved.

When finished viewing the log, select the Close button.

To exit the Attempt 1 view, select the Cancel button.
Two options:

Delete the in-progress attempt and let the student start over
- Select the box next to the students “In progress” Attempt 1.
- Scroll up and select the trash can icon to delete the attempt.
- If the quiz period is still open, you are finished. The student can re-take the quiz.
- If the quiz period has closed, give the student Special Access.
- Edit the Quiz and expand the Availability Dates & Conditions menu
- Select Manage Special Access
- Leave the top button selected, Allow selected users special access to this quiz
- Select Add Users to Special Access
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure you see the student’s name. If necessary, increase the number of students per page.
- Select the box next to the student’s name
- Scroll back up to the top of the page
- Select a new End Date
- Select Save
- Select Save and close (you will see a key next to the quiz name)
- Inform the student that he/she can start over.
- Submit the in-progress attempt for the student, and give a 2nd attempt when appropriate
- Select the icon to the right of the ‘In progress’ indicator, which allows you to Enter Quiz as User (student).
- Once you enter the quiz, scroll to the bottom of the page and select Submit Quiz.
- Follow the confirmation prompts.
- Once the quiz is submitted the student’s score will be calculated and recorded.
- If you want to give the student a 2nd attempt on the quiz, give Special Access.
- Edit the Quiz and expand the Availability Dates & Conditions menu
- Select Manage Special Access
- Leave the top button selected, Allow selected users special access to this quiz
- Select Add Users to Special Access
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure you see the student’s name. If necessary, increase the number of students per page.
- Select the box next to the student’s name
- Scroll back up to the top of the page
- Select a new End Date if necessary
- Under Attempts, select Override attempts limit
- Select 2 Attempts and select Apply
- Select Save
- Select Save and close
- Select Save and close (you will see a key next to the quiz name)
