How to manage combined courses in D2L

Summary

Information on how to manage combined courses in D2L.

Body

Combined Course Management

Some faculty who teaches two sections of the same course choose to combine their sections into one D2L shell. To help you determine if you should combine your sections, please read the information below.

Considerations for combining two sections into one D2L shell:

  • If your two sections use different materials and schedules, we do not recommend that you combine the sections. It is very difficult to manage two schedules in one shell.
  • If your two sections use the same materials and schedule of activities such as assignments, discussions, and quizzes, combining sections can save you time because you will build and manage one shell for the course, rather than duplicating your efforts.
  • The instructor will see students from both sections in the Classlist, Grades, Quizzes and Assignments; however, you can filter these tools by section (see information below).
  • Students will only see students from their own section in the Classlist.
  • When you set up Discussions in a combined shell, all students will participate together. If you want the sections separated for Discussions, you will need to use Group restrictions.

To merge two or more sections use the Course Self-Service Tool or contact Beth Jensen.

Filtering by Section

Classlist

In the Classlist, students will only see students from their own section, but the instructor will see all students. If you wish to send a message to one section at a time, you can filter the Classlist.

  1. Go to the Classlist
  2. Select the Filter by: menu at the top of the page and select a section
  3. Select Apply
  4. Select all the students on the page and select the Email button.
NOTE: Before sending an email, make sure all students are displayed. Scroll to the bottom of the list and adjust the number of students per page as needed.
  5. Compose your message and select Send.
  6. To return the Classlist to all students, select the Filter by: menu, select the Clear button and select Apply

Gradebook

You can view the Gradebook by section:

  1. Go to Grades
  2. Select the Filter by: menu at the top of the page and select a section
  3. Select Apply
  4. To see the 2nd section, select the Filter by: menu, select only the 2nd section, and select Apply
  5. To return to all students, select the Filter by: menu, select the Clear button and select Apply
NOTE: “Filter by” options are also available in Assignments and Quizzes
