Effective Date: October 20, 2026
Overview
On October 20, 2026, Bemidji State University (BSU) and Northwest Technical College (NTC) will move to Minnesota State’s Identity 3.0 sign-in system. The biggest benefit is simple: each account will have one familiar, email-style username that works across campus and Minnesota State systems. You will no longer need to remember different username formats for different services. Whether you sign in to a campus computer, Microsoft 365, D2L Brightspace, Zoom, Workday, or another service, you will use the same username format for that account.
Quick answer: Starting October 20, students will sign in with StarID@go.minnstate.edu, and employees will sign in with StarID@minnstate.edu. Your StarID, password, and email address are not changing.
Every BSU and NTC user is included in this change:
- Students
- Employees
- Individuals who are both employees and students
What Is Changing?
Beginning October 20, your sign-in will be easier to remember and more consistent. Use the username format below everywhere you access campus and Minnesota State services. Each account will have one consistent username format across systems.
Students
Use StarID@go.minnstate.edu for all campus and Minnesota State systems.
Example: ab1234cd@go.minnstate.edu
Employees
Use StarID@minnstate.edu for all campus and Minnesota State systems.
Example: ab1234cd@minnstate.edu
Employees Who Are Also Students
If you are both an employee and a student, you will still have two accounts. Use your employee username for work-related tasks and your student username for classes and other student activities.

Where Will I Use the New Username?
You will use your new username format across campus and Minnesota State services, including the systems below.
- Campus computers
- Printers
- Lab computers
- Wireless
- Campus applications
- Microsoft 365
- D2L Brightspace
- Zoom
- Kaltura
- Workday
- eServices
- Other Minnesota State services
What Is Not Changing?
Your StarID
Your StarID itself is not changing. You will add the appropriate ending to your StarID when you sign in: @go.minnstate.edu for a student account or @minnstate.edu for an employee account.
Example: If your StarID is ab1234cd, sign in as ab1234cd@go.minnstate.edu for your student account or ab1234cd@minnstate.edu for your employee account.
Your Password
Your current password will continue to work after the migration. Continue to manage your password through the Minnesota State StarID Self-Service portal.
What Do I Need to Do?
Before October 20
- Make sure you know your StarID and password.
- Confirm whether you will use the student username, the employee username, or both.
- Watch for additional communications from ITS.
- Watch for the migration timing from ITS, and save any important work before the migration begins.
On and After October 20
- Starting October 20, sign in with StarID@go.minnstate.edu for a student account or StarID@minnstate.edu for an employee account.
- If an application asks you to sign in again, enter the full username for that account: StarID@go.minnstate.edu for a student account or StarID@minnstate.edu for an employee account.
- If an app or personal device saved your old username, update it when prompted.
- Reconnect each phone, tablet, laptop, or other device to standard campus wireless. On or after October 20, sign in with StarID@go.minnstate.edu for a student account or StarID@minnstate.edu for an employee account. Devices registered through IT on the Residential PSK network will remain connected and functional; no action is needed.
What Should I Expect During the Migration?
The long-term result will be a simpler sign-in experience, but you may notice temporary interruptions while systems are updated:
- Some systems may be temporarily unavailable.
- You may be prompted to sign in again after the migration is completed.
- Standard campus wireless connections will disconnect during the migration. To reconnect, sign in again on each device with your full username. Devices registered through IT on the Residential PSK network are not affected and will remain connected and functional.
- The change may reach some systems before others. If your new username does not work in one service right away, wait a few minutes and try again.
- Help Desk call volumes may be higher than normal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is BSU/NTC making this change?
Identity 3.0 is designed to make signing in simpler. Instead of remembering which version of your username works in each system, you will use one consistent, email-style username for that account across campus and Minnesota State services. That means fewer failed sign-ins, less guesswork, and a smoother experience as you move between the tools you use every day. The project also modernizes identity and access management across Minnesota State and is a prerequisite for the Workday Student Project.
Will my email address change?
No. This change affects only the username you enter when signing in. Your email address and email services will not change as part of this project.
Will I need to reset my password?
No. Your current password will continue to work after the migration.
I am both an employee and a student. Which username do I use?
Use:
- StarID@minnstate.edu for employee-related activities.
- StarID@go.minnstate.edu for student-related activities.
Will my device on the Residential PSK network be disconnected?
No. Devices that were registered through IT and connected to the Residential PSK network will remain connected and functional throughout and after the Identity 3.0 migration. You do not need to reconnect or update the sign-in information on those devices.
What if I cannot log in after the migration?
If you experience login issues:
- Check that you entered your full username, including @go.minnstate.edu for a student account or @minnstate.edu for an employee account.
- Wait a few minutes and try again.
- Contact the ITS Help Desk if the issue persists.
Wireless Sign-In Instructions
Updated instructions for reconnecting phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices to standard campus wireless will be linked here as soon as the related KB articles are available. Devices registered through IT on the Residential PSK network do not need to be reconnected.
