Bensen 413: HyFlex Classroom

Bensen 413 is a hyflex classroom that seats 35 people with highly flexible seating arrangements.

Connecting at the Instructor Podium

There are two cables to be mindful of at the podium: HDMI and USB.

  • Connect the HDMI cable for in-room sharing from a laptop.
  • Connect both the HDMI cable and USB cable to extend sharing and invite participation from a Zoom audience. Use the provided cable hub to minimize cable connections at your laptop, if you like. This hub may also be used to convert HDMI to USB-C for Mac laptops.

Select the Laptop input on the touch panel. Use the volume adjustment on the touch panel and your laptop as needed.

  • If the laptop display is not shown, configure the laptop to send video output to a second display (Windows key + p, or Screen Mirroring on MacOS).
  • Adjust the laptop volume on the touch screen using the slider.

Using Zoom for Lecture Recording or Remote Audiences

Connect the USB cable on the desktop to your laptop or to the cable hub if you are using it. This will allow you to use the room's ceiling mics and cameras (front and rear).

There is a camera positioned at the back of the room, which will capture the front of the room for a Zoom audience and for recording lectures. There is a wireless lapel microphone at the instructor table, and additional audience microphones hanging from the ceiling. 

  • Connect your laptop with both the HDMI and USB cables provided. 
  • Start your Zoom meeting from the Zoom Workplace app on your laptop. During start-up, you'll be asked to choose your audio and video devices in Zoom. 
    • Audio: For the microphone, choose Echo Cancelling/EasyIP Decoder. For the speaker, choose Crestron.
    • Video: For the camera, choose EasyIP Decoder.

  • Tap the Camera button on the touch panel to adjust the pan, tilt, and zoom of the room camera. Some presets are available for common focal points. A "Vaddio" remote control is also provided on the instructor table. 
  • If you plan to record the lecture, choose the Record option in Zoom, and then select Record to Cloud. 
  • For the best experience for those on Zoom or watching the recording, use the wireless lapel microphone, and zoom the camera in far enough to capture the speaker's facial expressions.
  1. In the Zoom Workplace app on your laptop, begin your meeting and choose "Echo Cancelling Speakerphone" (Easy-IP Decoder) as your microphone. Choose "Crestron" as your speaker:

  2. For video, choose "EasyIP Decoder", and then on the touch panel select which camera you want active (Instructor or Audience). You can control the pan, tilt, and zoom of each camera using the touch panel controls.

  3. Controlling the active camera and adjusting the sensitivity of the mics is done via the touch panel, using the Microphone and Cameras buttons at the top right:

Using the Document Camera or Blu-ray Player

The touch panel has input buttons for a Document Camera and for a Blu-ray DVD player.

  • Tap the Document Camera input, and then ensure the document camera is turned on (blue LED lights = on, red lights = off). Position the item of interest below the camera lens, and adjust using the doc cam remote (Elmo), including zoom, focus, and lighting. 
  • Tap the Blu-ray input. Open the cabinet door to reveal the Blu-ray DVD player. Ensure it is powered on, and insert the disc you wish to play. Use the control buttons provided on the touch panel to navigate the disc contents.
